Abstract
Diabetes is increasing in incidence globally, including Korea. According to the 2018 fact sheet on diabetes published by the Korean Diabetes Association, one in seven Korean adults over the age of 30 is estimated to have diabetes, which is more than five million people. Approximately 25% of Korean adult are at risk of diabetes. Furthermore, since less than 70% of individuals are aware that they have diabetes, this is a serious health issue. In order to effectively prevent diabetes, early diagnosis should be prioritized. The inclusion of HbA1C tests in the national health examination should be considered. The public should be informed of the severity and risks of diabetes, and campaigns on diabetes awareness should be instituted. To help achieve this goal, the Korean diabetes risk model can be utilized. In addition, many efforts to prevent obesity and diabetes should be made through various national-level projects.
